Why is it that the welfare system pays people to have babies? I teach older minority adults and they often speak of their peers who have babies so that they can get extra money from the government each month. Why has the government not put a stop to this? What is the government's responsibility?

i'm a single mom on government assistance. i think it's great for the ones who need it. i mean i just got out a very abusive relationship with my daughter's father, and without their help, i don't know what i'd do. trying to get a fresh start to get back on my feet.
but i know what you mean. there are a lot of women out there that have children...just for the monthly check they receive each month. and a majority of those women don't even use the money on their children. they use it on themselves. women like that should get their children taken from them or at least get their damn tubes tied. in fact i know where i live that after the 3rd child, they no longer allow assistance. they will pay for the other 3...but none that come after. and i think that if the women doesn't agree to stop having children...there is some court thing they go through to get a court order for the woman to get her tubes tied.

It's a terrible thing, but the bureaucracy has been in place long enough that getting it out will involve some heavy work. As a Libertarian, I believe that work is worthwhile.

First, we will need to put politicians in place who understand that throwing federal tax dollars at a problem rarely solves it, and often (as in the case of the young women you mention) makes it worse. Then we need to study the programs done by non-profit foundations and churches and the like which are effective in solving social problems. I think we are going to find that the most successful, perhaps the only really successful ones, are local. You need to know the people where you live and the way things are done, and the federal bureaucrats know nothing. The state bureaucrats are about the same, but somewhat closer.

But getting young women education and jobs and a chance to make something of their lives before they marry and have children is the best antidote I can see to the particular problem you mention.

It is not a lot of money, and there's a lot of paperwork and loss of privacy and so one for a young woman to be supported by the taxpayers' money for raising her child. If there were better solutions in place -- co-op child care, for example, and volunteer surrogate grandparents -- those girls would not be lured by the chance to get a welfare check.

Slaves. Cheap laborers. They will grow up to provide cheap labor.

Also: Many of them will join the military. Most people feel like they pay too much in taxes but never join the military.

In Italy it's different. They pay people to have more than one child because the population in Italy actually started to shrink.

I agree, but that's the way it is We pay taxes to raise the innocent children of irresponsible parents so that there is no Social Security for our children when they are of age. I won't even get started......

I would imagine that our responsibility would be towards the upbringing of that innocent child.
