The director came up with the idea for the film while standing in the hardware section of a store with a chainsaw display. He loosely based Leatherface's character on real life cannibal and necrophiliac Ed Gein.
So, yeah, it's sort of based on a little bit of truth but not really.

It depends on what you mean "real". It was based very loosely on a serial killer named Ed Gein at least according to Tobe Hooper. Chances are he decided to say it was based on Gien as an afterthought, because it doesn't resemble Gien's story much. The movie "Psycho" was also based on Gien, which was probably a little closer to the real story. Gien killed his mother and kept her room exactly as it had been the day he murdered her. He also made furniture out of human bones, like in TCM. Gien never used a chainsaw, and it wasn't a family affair. Eventually he was caught and he died several years later in the nut house.
If there were a family of cannibalistic, chainsaw wielding psychos, eventually it would have made the 6'oClock news. .

No. The creator of the film was in the hardware section of a department store, waiting in line. He got so frustrated that he fantasized about taking a chainsaw and killing everyone. As he created it, he loosely based the main character/family on Ed Gein.

Yes. It's based on events that happendin a house in Travis County. It's in Austin, Texas. The Original house is still standing. It's been moved since then though. ( I know,because I lived near there) Creepy huh?

Well lets see.. if it says that its based on true events.. That usually means what happend in the movie didin't happend. They just had an idea based off of something that really did happend. But doesn't mean that they use that story. They make one of their own up. If its based on a true story then they used the real story for the movie

My brother just got married to a girl whos half sister is a police officer and works at the jail where the murdurer is held. In livingston,Tx. She says he stinks and has skin disese and he makes her want to throw up. Yes it is real, but the event were not as true as in the movies.

Yes, it did happen, but the movies sort of sensationalized it a bit. The original movie from the 70s was more realistic and really scary.
