I want to move to the northwest hopefully portland but I want to explore my options. It would be nice to find a liberal city with a relatively low crime rate. I would also like the city to have a good choice of colleges and higher education facilities. I am also a big fan of small business.

Why would you want to move to liberal city? Crime and liberelism go hand in hand anyway. I hear SanFrancisco is liberal but expensive, and full of acid-tripping hippies.

New Haven, CT
terrific city! not REAL expensive ... very diverse community...many opportunities for music, theatre, film, dining, hiking ... and of course, five colleges in a small city.
And only an hour ride on the Amtrak to New York!
