Yes. If you don't believe me, leave a tape recorder there and play it back later with the volume turned way up.

If you still think no, I've got a question for you, does it make as many noises as there are individuals to hear it?

The vibrations themselves are the noises. The influence on the ears, that's just reception.

There are several ways to look at this. You could take a semantic approach and say it depends on
how you define “noise.” Or, you could look at the physics and set up equipment to measure the
changes in air pressure that occur when the tree falls and humans aren’t present. What makes this
question interesting from a software quality assurance point of view is not the answer, but the
fact that anyone thought to ask it in the first place. It implies that trees make noise (or not), or
that noise in the forest is important (or not) only if there are people for whom tree noise is
important. If no one ever visited this forest, it can be as quiet as outer space or a cacophony of
creaking timber, and nobody will know...or care.

There is always "something" living in the forest to hear a tree fall if it did. So yes, it does make a noise.

Yes, it does. I have seen a tree fall and been too far from it to hear it fall but the birds and animals in the nearby glade could be seen to be startled and move away in the opposite direction.
Some of the deer could not see the tree but moved off at speed due to being startled by the noise.
This answered this time honoured question for me.

This old question certainly relates well to man's arrogance and disregard for the natural environment. As if anything of nature must ask man's permission to do something! Probably based on some old religious text or something, regarding man's dominance over the earth.

Yes most certainly. Does a baby crying make a noise when a mother is not there to hear it? Yes most certainly.

is that the same as asking: if you put a cat in a sealed, airtight, lead lined box without any way of seeing inside or weighing it etc - how do you know the cat is actually there and hasn't been moved out of your plane of existence until you open the box again? (see: schroedinger)

p.s. did someone cut the tree down or did it die of natural causes?

NO! the vibrations dont turn into noise until it hits someones eardrum, therefore if theres no-one there to hear it it just stays as vibrations not noise!
