When I was like 12, I was travelling to Miami by myself and there was a group of other kids being escorted around the airport. One of the kids was British and I assumed he would know Princess Diana. He was quite annoyed with that!

I'm British and at first my American penpal expected me to be all posh and speak 'the Queen's english.' She also presumed that I'd be kind of snobby and eat scones everyday!

Sometimes people from other countries seem to think that we all live in or near London too!

They think the English are backward and talk like the queen, they think the Irish live in the stone age. But don't take it to heart because most Americans are a bit dim.
Watch cops on Sky and you'll see the real America,

Well, you were 12!
Biggest stereotype for me (being an English girl) was backpacking and people from other nationalities expected me to be either drunk or stupid or the men expected me to sleep with them. English girls have a poor reputation overseas - it's embarrassing - I wish the other girls wouldn't let the side down and as for the male footy fans and their fighting etc. I'm so ashamed my countrymen and women behave in that way.

We met some lovely Americans in Cornwall a few years ago and when we told them we lived in Yorkshire they were really excited, they assumed we owned a large farm and were experts on Yorkshire dialect, wore flat caps and were excellent a training dogs, lived on Yorkshire puddings and were very well off, we found that really funny, but we all make assumptions about how others live at some time in our life.

When I visited America, the only stereotype I found - if it was a stereotype - was when I asked for chips, the chap explained that they were the things he indicated (crisps). I just nodded dumbly, as I knew what I was asking for (I wanted crisps), and wasn't sure what to say. Dumb, OK.

As Irish my biggest stereotype is that we are all republicans [we are not!]

As British my biggest stereotype is that we are posh /well mannered. I don't mind this but again it isn't always true! lol!

That we Irish are mostly pyschotic, sectarian, backward, anachronistic savages who carry out ethnic cleansing and campaigns of violence against each other simply because of our religious or political affiliations.

Hang on........that's true, isn't it?
