I'm fed up with having crispy towels that feel like sandpaper! Unless I tumble dry (expensive) my towels come out stiff as a board and dead rough! Not nice, especially for my little kidlets!

Vinegar added to the rinse water will do and won't affect the absorbancy like dryer sheets or liquid softener will. For a full load, add one cup. Don't worry the smell dissapates.

Sorry, but tumble drying is the only way to go for fluffy towels - that, and lots of fabric conditioner! Tosave on electricity, air dry them until only just damp and then whack them in the dryer for about 5 mins, that'll be enough to soften them right back up.

You need to shake them out really, really well before you hang them up to dry, really shake them and they will not be so stiff when they dry. A little fabric softener is ok, but fabric softener does make them less absorbent.

Same way as I get my towelling bathrobe fluffy and soft the only way is in the tumble dryer if it works on that crusty old thing it will work on anything

I find that hanging them out to dry on the washing line in the wind rather than on a radiator indoors makes them softer as they are moving around as they dry rather than hanging still.

I don't use fabric softener as it wears out your fabrics quicker. I don't have scratchy towels. I DO use water softener in my washing machine and therefore less washing powder. (like Calgon tablets but cheaper) maybe this helps?

tumble drying keeps them soft - next best think would be to line dry them outside in the wind

A half cup of vinegar in the wash will do the trick. It actually brings their absorbency back up!
