I'd consider doing the Black Friday thing if I didn't have to take a car. I can deal with crowds and long lines, but I have to have a parking spot!
And yes, 2 pm on Thanksgiving seems a bit extreme to me. I wouldn't want to spend the night at a store.

It's been years since I did the Black Friday thing. I think it it totally crazy, although I see that people do get some real bargains, it just isn't worth it to me. Last year at one of our mall stores a woman was trampled and ended up in the hospital when people run over her trying to rush through the door. That is insane.

Im in line by 3:30 am that morning.. And Im done shopping by 1 or so.. Last yr I spent 3 grand in a little over 2 and 1/2 hours! I love it! Im ready for it again this yr.. You'd be surprised the deals you get but you have to have it planned out.. Don't just go to a store cause you think they will have a deal..And be patient and Fast!

It's called black Friday because retailers gage how well their holiday sales will go based on that day. In other words, they look to see if they'll be "in the black" (profitable). If not, then they try to make necessary changes.
It also has a connotation of being "black Friday" because it's spooky or scary to go shopping on that day. But the main reason it got the name in the first place was as financial slang for corporations and the stock market.
I don't personally shop on black Friday. But unfortunately I WILL probably have to work -- in order to accommodate all you shop-a-holics. I think you should all stay home so that us retail workers can be with our families. ;) Don't tell my boss. =P

I shop on Black Friday but I will not leave my house on Thanksgiving just to get in a line for a sale. For me its a good day to get a discount on electronics and toys, I have 4 children, 3 sisters, 2 nephews so this allows me to bar gin shop and save some money but still get good gifts.

Yes, it is insane. But the stores advertise such "great" specials and deals that many people feel they have to line up to get the bargains!
KMart is open on Thanksgiving (at least it used to be).
I agree with you. Sacrificing one's Thanksgiving holiday for some bargains that may get broken or forgotten shortly after Christmas isn't worth the effort.

I do go to some sales first thing in the morning, depending on what I am looking for. 2004 I found a 4mp camera for $97 so I knew I would go to the store to get it, same with 2005 for a certain laptop that was 50% off. I don't make it an all day thing, though. That's about it.

I go around mid-morning. All the sales are usually still in effect and I don't have to deal with the traffic or the lines from the the early morning shoppers.

Can't do it! I give my kids cash (and maybe 1 or 2 things under the tree), and they go and catch the "Day after Christmas Sales"
I get to stay home and have a quiet day (cause they're all at the mall!)

Black Friday is the best time to go for really cheap Christmas gifts. You could probably buy all your friends and family members gifts at once. :)
