I don't know about carrying the weapon, that may be a little overkill. But in Kennesaw GA, it is a city ordinance that you have to own a gun (unless you are a conscientious objector). Their crime has reduced significantly because of this ordinance.

Well, not that they have to CARRY them, but all Swiss men who are elible for call to military service are issued an automatic rifle to keep at home, and free amunition which they MUST use up in practice every year. Heard of any crime in Switzerland lately? No, and Hitler didn't go there either.
Now, people who don't WANT to carry a firearm, or that aren't thoroughly trained in their proper use AND in the legal aspects of using one (even in their own defense) shouldn't carry a gun. The laws of many more recent "carry" states are designed to ensure that everyone understands this information before they are licensed to carry. Indiana has one of the oldest (1925) and least sophisticated concealed carry laws in America, yet over many years it has had less violent crime than demographically similar states llike Illinois and Missouri.

There would be an increase in crime for the first couple months but I am positive that crime would go down. Crime would go up because there would be a lot of self defense shootings and then once the criminals got wise they would stop the crime. You need to fix that question because some people who are insane, or have mental handicaps should not carry a gun!

Yes, I think crimes would go down. Rapists would think twice about attacking a woman who carries a gun and knows how to use it, car jackers probably wouldn't be so eager to pull the crap they pull, robbers would think twice. Think about it -- would a convenience store robber be so eager to go in waving a gun when he knew there'd be half a dozen people pointing their guns back at him?

Possibly if we were all taught gun safety at an early age and grew up with them. However, I don't think this is a very effective way to curb violence. Statistically countries where hand guns are illegal have a much lower rate of handgun related crimes then countries where hand guns are legal. Seems simple, since people have access to them.

They didn't call it the wild wild west for nothing. In New York City where 8 million people live in such close proxmity whenever certain people get really mad they will shoot somone. Additionally, if a robber pulls a gun and eveyone in the store has a gun mass chaos will ensue. People will start shooting, some will miss and hit innocent guys. Those guys buddys will shoot back and you will have the cops arriving at a shootout bettween 25 people.

I think a lot of people would want to more than possess those buggers. They'd wanna shoot em off, probably at each other. And if a robber knew you had a gun, he'd make darn sure he was a better shot.
I might add that criminals would be far more likely to posses better and more powerful guns than those that were "required" to go out and buy one.

I think it's more clever to let people choose themselves if they want to carry a gun. Some people can't handle it, so there might be more accidents.
But I agree, street criminals won't be pleased with so many guns around, that's a positive effect :)

20 years ago I worked in a gunless society...
Voilent crimes on the general population were over 300% higher than the surrounding areas.
Rapes were up over 150% and assaults on law enforcement was 200% higher.
Gunless societies don't exist, sorry I was a prison guard no guns allowed.
Criminals fear only pain and death (their own) and the police or armed citizen that can inflict it.

9/11 would never have happened if most people on those planes were carrying guns. Neither would most other crimes. Criminals would think twice about breaking into someones house if they thought they might end up dead.
