i'm sure there must be sxome technical name for a book going back and forth between the past and the present (see fried green tomatoes) does anyone happen to know what it is??

I agree with answerer number one that it is "flashback." Another possibility is you can do a frame story - where you start out in one setting, but then the narrator or the action returns to another point in time in the same or a different setting. Yet another possibility is to write something from a stream of consciousness point of view - where events from the past and present may flip back and forth just because that's the way it is written (confusing, so I don't look for things written that way). By the way, "Stream of consciousness" and flashbacks are often used in the way music videos are produced. For example, the singer is telling about a boyfriend or girlfriend, and the visuals keep showing clips of the past along with clips of how the singer is singing a few lines at a time. There may be a more technical term for that in the industry, but there are some possibilities for you.

I'd probably say something like "time shifting".
I like the previous answer.
Check out some critiques of William Faulkner and you should be able to find a word for this literary technique; he used it in his books.
