Different doctors have different opinions when it comes to starting a baby on cereal. Call you pediatrician. My mom started me on cereal when I was 6 weeks old, and I was a fat kid!!! Your doctor will tell you what he/she recommends.

They suggest that you should wait actually until 6 months, but for a bigger baby you can go as early as 4, but if you feel like he isnt getting full and is able to swallow and not thrust out his tounge, then go ahead and try a little. Make sure you mix it with formula and breastmilk to get the most nutrition and make it pretty thin at first. If he is spitting it out and trying to suck and thrusts his tounge outwards then he isnt ready.
Make sure you use one grain baby cereal (rice cereal or oatmeal, all located in the baby aisle) and no other foods for a few weeks, or atleast one. Then when he is ready for baby foods you need to choose the jars that have only one fruit or vegetable (Stage 1 in gerber) and introduce a new fruit or vegetable every week, (only bananas for a week, then the next week you can do peas for a week), this way if they have an allergy you will know what food brought it on. You should also start with vegetables, otherwise they will develop an likeness towards the fruits and not want the veggies!
Good Luck!

My daughter will be 3 months Oct 2nd and for about a month I have, at the instruction of my Pediatrician, putting Rice cereal in her formula. She is always hungry and this seems to help. I do a 2:1 ratio.....2oz:1tsp of cereal and feed 3 oz every 3 hrs. Now she is going with 4oz every 3 hrs....we tried her on cereal the other day and she had a hard time understanding the spoon, but we did a few bites and then went to the bottle just to get her acclimated. Get a food processor and grind the cereal down to a thin powder, as my friend says "cocaine fine" and then put it in their formula when you are making bottles. My daughter seems to sleep longer and is spitting up less. She is almost 15lb and 25" long at 11weeks and very healthy. (Ok Im gloating...but thats hard not to do as a parent)
Good luck!

It's really best to wait until a baby is between the ages of 4 to 6 months. I would talk to your doctor first and see what he/she recommends. Some parents "jump the gun" and start feeding babies solids long before the baby is really ready for it. And for people who say that feeding a baby cereal will help them sleep better....not always true! Yes it can help some babies but not all so not rely on this to help your baby sleep. Also you really need to feed solids with a spoon and not a bottle.
Good luck!

Most studies have found you shouldn't feed kids solid foods like cereal until 4 months of age. Starting too early might cause obesity later in life or diabetes. Call your pediatrician to see when he/she recommends starting your son. You might feel that giving him cereal will help him sleep at night, but this is an old wive's tale and it might make sleep more difficult for him. Consult with his doctor to make sure you start at the right time.

The simple answer is no. The more complicated answer is that they are recommending that you wait until 6 months now due to all the studies done showing that babies simply cannot digest regular food, their gut is not mature enough. As for the old argument that they'll sleep longer well that could or could not be the case but overall you would simply be filling up their little stomachs with food that might as well be flour paste for all the nutrients they will get out of it. Check out http://kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html It has a lot of great links . HTH!

Different dr.'s will tell you different things, but they really should not have anything but formula/mothers milk till they are 6 months. They say that starting them sooner can cause a higher risk of diabetes. I know it is exciting and I could hardly wait to start feeding food, but really wait as long as possible, it will be better for the baby in the long run.

Too soon. Wait at least til 4 mos. He should be able to hold his head up on his own and show some kind of interest. Some people (though I wont do it) put a small amount of cereal in a bottle of formula, but to me, whats the point? Do you drink cereal?

Try mixing in a very little bit of rice cereal into a very little bit of baby food, like bananas. Don't really start giving him full solid food meals till like 6 months.

Babies can eat very well since they are very young, the problem could be that they might not tolerate them. If there is a history of allergies in your family, better wait until your baby is 6 months old.Talk to your pediatrician about it.
I do not know if you are bottle or breast feeding your baby but, both ways will provide enough nutriments until then.
Good luck!

I was told that I could start putting baby cereal in my sons bottle when he was three months old and he slept much better at night. That information from his pediatriton. He was a much happier baby, and he is now 15 and 6ft 2 in and in great shape. Good luck
