Vail in the fall (Sept, Oct, & Nov) is great fun.
This is off season for the ski resort so you'll avoid the tourists. Merchandise is usually 50-70% off ... Resturants are still open w/ great food at discount ... hotels are discounted.
Activities are:
Beer Feastivals
Wine tasting
Bike ridding
Jeep Tours
Horseback Ridding
Hot Tubbing
Rafting (advanced since water is low)
Concerts (classical & punk stuff)
Shopping.

Estes Park. Just outside Rocky Mountain National Park, spectacular mountain scenery.
Aspen. Nice old city, nice scenery, many fine shops and restaurants. A very expensive place to visit in winter, just expensive in off season (until November).
Denver. Museums, restaurants, parks, cultural events. Nice mountain stuff available as daytrips.
Depends on what you want to do. Estes for mountains, Aspen for resort kinda stuff, Denver for a big city mix.

My family owns property in Pagosa Springs Colorado. If you like the mountains and snow you should at least visit Durango and Silverton.
