The Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) is an excellent source for just about every film and television program ever done.
If you go to power search, you can search by genre (comedy, western, science fiction) and search for individual years.
Found about 2500 shows that aired during the 1950s,
about 450 comedies.

A book titled "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows" is pretty good if you want to research off-line. It's truely exhaustive. Authors: Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh. Most bookstores and libraries have a copy.
