my son started kdg. this year( he will be 5 in Oct) I am having such a hard time with getting him to sit for any length of time to do his homework. His teacher sends practice sheets for the alphbet home and he just wont do it. He is also getting notes sent home about not listening and not finishing his work. He always wants to play. he has been in school for 4 weeks now, I thought that he would have adjusted by now, but he hasnt. Can any one give me any ideas on how to get this child to do his work. My Dr thinks that i should have him tested for ADHD. I am not sure if I want to do this or not. Any thoughts or sugesstions would be greatly appreciated.

nowadays, parents just dope their kids up before they send them to school.

Too many kids are getting misdiagnosed as having ADHD. Some kids are just not ready for school and if you push it on them, it just makes the problem worse. If it's not too late, you should look at the option of taking him out of school and waiting another year. If not, he'll probably behave this way for the duration of his school career.

If you can't take him out of school, my advice is to not give up with the homework. Find a specialty toy store that has educational games and get him to play while learning. I work at a store like this. We have a program called "Write On!" and it's a DVD that comes with a work book. and it helps kids learn to write while having fun. It may encourage him.

I think he has ADD. 1 in 4 kids have it just some cases are more severe. Have him tested... and I know someone who has add also. They'll give you therapy to make your child conentrate. However, I would try to do this privately because sometimes they'll put your kid in specail education which is not good for his life in general. I have seen many cases of this.

Since he is only four years old....maybe he is just not emotionally ready or physically ready for school. It is TOTALLY ok to hold him out of school this year, and re-enroll him when he is 5, almost 6 years old.

Take your doctors advice and have him tested for learning disabilities that might hinder his ability to pay attention or absorb new information.

Teach him there are consequences for his actions. If he doesn't listen take something away from him, like his favorite toy, TV, video game,etc.. Works with both my kindergartners
