Just moved to Austin and lizards/geckos jump out of my mailbox everytime I go to retrieve mail. Is this a common problem?

Yeah, I've heard that the Austin reptiles are REALLY curious about newcomers' mail! I think they are trained and employed by the CIA ... I can't be sure about that, though. Still, there have been big advances in surveillance and in the use of animals in secret projects.

Apart from putting a flap on your mailbox, I don't see any way of keeping them out. A mailbox is a nice place for a lizard/gecko ... I guess that's why the Secret Service might choose them for the job.

We used to live there, and we got some insulation (the foam kind you put around your doors) and applied it to the cracks (using it like a gasket) of the mailbox where the little suckers got in. We did this and got a pretty wild little kitten to hang out around outside. We didn't have any problems after that. I'm not sure if it was the kitten or gasket that did it, but the cat got lazy after she got older, and the lizards were still out of the mail. Good luck!

Maybe you should try to change the mail box. Find some neighbors in town, even go to a nearby store that sells mailboxes and ask what is a good one that will keep them out!
Good Luck at your new home! And good luck keeping the lizards out!

ROTFL!!! This is a first I've ever heard of leaping lizards in conjunction with a mailbox! Try putting two or three mothballs in a small satchel (cloth bag) and placing it in the back of the mailbox to keep them out. Also consider making other areas for them to hide under during the heat of the day such as decorative logs in your flowerbed or decently sized rocks in your yard. I'd highly wager that they are going to the mailbox for shade and a place to hide during the heat of the day.

I read this somewhere, if you put a bounce sheet in your mail box, it should keep pests away. Try it, se if it works.
