I have always considered them to be trip hop but it is not important to pigeon hole them as they are in my view superb bit tricky to get in to but well worth the effort but I am very biased toward Portishead !

Why must everything belong to a genre?
But according to wiki it's ''Trip-Hop'' but they obviously just invented that to place it into a category.
