I just saw Oprah yesterday on her road trip and she stopped in Durango Colorado and it was gorgeous. I always wanted to live in a small town. How is life in Durango. I am from a big city would I be able to make it there? How is the job situation?

OK being you asked.

Durango is beautiful, but has changed so much in the last 20 yrs. old timers don't even recognize it anymore. Most tend to say it's been Californicated. The left coasters have moved in and built mansions that has made the tax base go sky high. That's why I now live in New Mexico, just south of the Colorado state line. Right now the LaPlata mountains have snow on them -- early. The town is very touristy and has a small college that provides most all of the snooty restaurant workers. Durango has changed so much it's a shame. Used to be a small town, ranching, farming community......not now. If you don't have some $$$ don't even think about it. Rent and or purchase is out of sight. Tourism is the major industry now. Look it up on line via their Chamber and don't believe everything you see....It Is a Great place to visit though. Most can't afford to live there.

Durango CO today is a resort town in the San Juan Mountains. It is a very beautiful place to visit but it is also quite expensive as well.

The Silverton Train that runs on narrow gage tracks between Durango and Silverton, CO takes you through some breath taking country. Reservations are a total must and often be made a year in advance. It is worth it however.

The Bar-D Chuck wagon is also a great evening of fun and entertainment.

Durango was originally part of the Gold and Silver rush of the 1800's. The area is geared to that era today. Like most tourist areas expect tons of people and high prices. All resort areas of Colorado are expensive.

I lived in Colorado for 40+ years. I have traveled, fished, Hunted, and jeeped almost all of the San Juan mtn. areas for many years.

I grew up in Durango in the 90's, at the time it was just a small tourist town, nothing much happened in the winter and you couldn't get through the streets in the summer. It was then a pretty nice place to live. Now that tourism is a all year thing it has become a mini Aspen and the cost of living is very high along with rent. It is beautiful there, I haven't been back for ten years now, it was a little peaceful then.
