Does it matter what the public thinks? Does the public know a heck of a lot about what it's like to be gay? I don't think so.
I think you should: (1) talk to your friend and ask him how hard it is to be gay in society today, e.g. your circle of friends; (2) research homosexuality, do some soul-searching, and decide for yourself whether you are okay with it; (3) decide how to resolve any conflict between your beliefs and his homosexuality.
My personal opinion is, you should be honored that he told you, because it's very difficult for gay men to come out in this society, and it looks like he wants to come clean and to stop living a lie. I'm straight, but my best friend told me about 5 years ago. We are still good friends today. I still don't wanna see him kissing his boyfriend though. Gross!
One last thought: When you see two beautiful women kissing, does it turn you on? Is that "wrong"?

I found out my best friend since high school was gay about 11 years ago. She is now married to her partner, and living in Vancouver. I accepted it, and love her for who she is like I always have. That's what true friends do. When we speak on the phone or get together when she's in town, it's as if nothing has ever changed. I have no problem with gay people.

If this person is your best friend it shouldn't make any difference at all weather he or she is gay or not.. that doesn't change the way that he or she treats you .. and you still have the same things in common as you did before that made your friends then.. I don't think it should make any difference to you at all. they are still people ..and if it really bothers you , you weren't as good as friend as you claimed to be..
don't lose a good friend over something that has nothing to do with you..

I have friends of both sexes who are gay. In most cases, I knew they were even before they told me. It didn't matter to me. I still love them. It's really none of my business what someones sexual orientation is. I don't talk about my sex life to anyone. That's private and so I never expect to hear or care to know what others do in this respect.

Pray for him. Also it would depend on how he or she acted. My friends and I don't discuss our sexuality. If my friend didn't either it really wouldn't matter. It is not for me to judge. It is between him and his God. What any of my friends do behind the closed doors of their home is none of my business.

I would support them completely. If they have been my friend for 18 years already, that shouldn't make any difference in our relationship.

As a straight man I can say that I would ask the following:
1. Are you sure and have you thought about this?
2. Can we still be friends?
Then I would say
YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT. BE YOURSELF

I would be a little taken aback that it took him so long to let me know. One expects trust from friends. Gayness itself is obviously no issue.

Nothing. I'd still be his/her best friend. S/he hasn't changed s/he's always been that way. Just now there's no more secret.
