A colleague stopped for a chat while I was outside eating lunch. He was munching away on a Chunky (those square chunks of chocolate in the silver wrapper).

I've never before had one of those nor ever wanted one. But now it's like I've gotta run and get one from the bookstore.

Yes, it's like your friend confirmed that the ads were true about how good something is, so now you want to try it for yourself.
We tend to trust people we know more than ads. It's the same reason many look at reviews before buying an item we are unsure of.
