This is sort of a trick question as the Marines, being amphibeous,
are de facto part of the Navy, so you really want to include them
as Navy as well. The Air Force was part of the Army till WW2,
after it became its own center of influence.
If you are or were military, try to ignore the collective results of the Army-Navy football game please(Navy leads 50-49 at this time, BTW)

In all serious, which branch, US Army or Navy, carries more gravitas in the present day?
I say Army, just from the sheer numbers of soldiers, but maybe I'm wrong.

I'll be the first to admit I'm omitting the Air Force, but I consider
it a de facto adjunct of the Army, and a pure softing up force
for the Army as well. Plus, the Air Force, as far as I can see, takes
marching orders from the other two branches, if anything.
Well, what do you think? What branch carries more weight,
Army or Navy?

Racha, great points! This almost seems
like a game of Rock, Scissors, Paper, when you look at it! LOL! Seriously, however you slice it, its a tough call.
Like King Solomon in the bible and the baby. You need both parts, and one cannot exist without the other. You put them together, though, and you really have something!
And I still think Army has more gravitas! LOL

lee, you were making some great points till you lost us with the iran stuff, but to get back to your original point...yes, the army is truly the only "self-contained" branch,
so to speak, and the only branch that has actively. That is a tremendous argument
FOR army. Couldn't put it any better myself.

The only branch that has actively drafted.......finishing the line from above..

I see that alot of people don't know there military history or what each branch is capable of. The Army is far more advanced and stronger than any other branch. The navy has the Navy Seals and the Marines, but the Army has special Forces, air assult, airbourne, infintry, and Rangers.More technology and history than any other branch. The training that some of these soldiers have is as good if not better then the seals.By the way Irans army is much more larger than ares. They might not have the same technology as use but don't forget strenght is in numbers. In todays time don't you think that we need to build are armed forces back up. PEOPLE WE ARE NOT THE BIGGEST MILITARY FORCE IN THE WORLD,I'AM TIRED OF AMERICANS THINKING THAT.

Lets see Army or Navy. Both are pretty powerful.

You have the Army (with the Air force) so you have brains of the operation and the men and women to follow the orders.

You have the Navy (with the Marines) so you have the courage of the few and the proud with travel and attacks from the sea.

I'm going to go with the Navy, even though I myself was in the Air Force. With the the Navy you have attacks from the air, land and sea. Without the ships there will be no attack from the sea. Fighter jets can be deployed from the ships. And the ship carries thousands of men to duty.

May not be logical, but that's my pick. Nothing against the Army.

Hmmm. This is a very difficult question. Well, I have an idea. Let's make a challenge a little more complex than the Army-Navy football game.

Let's pick a country at random, say Iran. Let's let the Army and Navy use every weapon in their arsenal and every trick up their uniform sleeves to disable the nuclear facilities, disarm the military and destabilize the government. The winners will get medals. Whaddya say?

I would have to say the Army would be more powerful.
Maybe I am a little biased here, being an Army spouse, but it would seem like the Army plays a larger part in the war on terrorism than any other branch. 4 tours of duty for our post in 3 years. HOOAH

Consider the following fact: 2 American Nimitz-class carrier groups (about 28 ships, give or take a few), can pack more collective firepower than the total combined active naval force of any other nation on earth!

By the way, we have 11 of these carrier groups.

Navy, but I am biased. We can launch Tomahawks at a target and be gone again before they even know we're there. We hsve the SEALs. We have our little brother, the Marines. We have the baddest fighter jets and a mobile platform to rain hell on anyone, anywhere. There is a silent fleet of Trident missile subs waiting to unleash armageddon, as well.

The Marines (Navy) are called the few and proud for a reason. There are fewer number of Marines than the Army. Boot camp for the Marines is tougher and longer, and the Marines are more respected. Semper Fi.......
