For about 8 months now my car hasn't been starting right it kind of has that ehhh ehhh ehh ehh before it starts but it always starts. Today i turned it on and the engine light came on any idea what it might be. I'm taking it to pep boys after work to get it checked out but i'd like to have an idea of what it could be.

It just got a tune up about 4000 miles ago and it just got an oil change 1500 miles ago.

the check engine light is an "idiot light" telling you to take it to a garage to get what ever code the computer is throwing out fixed

The little car is computer controlled. What you are driving is for the most part physical and mechanical. The computer cannot talk to you. So when it "sees" a defect or failure in an electronic circuit or system that it monitors, the only means it has of telling you is with the "Check Engine" light.
The problem could be something as simple as a loose fuel cap, or something much more complex, like a cam sensor.
When you retrieve the code(s) that triggered the light, the tech will know what circuit or system to check and repair.
The thing for you and the tech to remember is that the code represents a failure in a circuit or system, NOT NECESSARILY a particular component.
Sometimes it is easier (but not necessarily cheaper) just to replace the major component and call it diagnostics and repair.
But if there is something else contributing to the failure, you get to do it again.
Be very careful with discount auto repair. There are some that are very good, but many are driven by a percentage of the money brought into the shop and don't really go the extra mile to complete the repair correctly., , nor do they make much effort to keep costs down.
Good Luck

I don't think it's anything big.I have a 1998 suburban and my service engine soon light has been on for about 2 years and nothing has happend it's the EGR valve on my suburban it's like a 300 dollar part but it's not crucial to be fixed at the moment i have 191,000 miles on it and it's still chugging along.i think you will be fine for a while just get your oil and all of you fluids checked and you will be fine.

There's thousands of moving parts in a Car. It is like the most complicated piece of machinery that an average consumer will ever buy.
And you want us to diagnose it off of "Ennh, Ennh, Ennh?"
hehe.
It could be anything from the starter to the coil packs, to the on board computer, to the OS or MAF sensors. Or.... Well you get the idea.

You are better of taking it there. Have you checked the oil and stuff like that. It may be that you need a new battery. Sometimes the cool weather does that to the cars.

Recently fuel up? Check the gas cap. May not be properly sealing the filler pipe. This is a common problem.
