This is really a 2 part question. We're in the beginning stages of planning a road trip from San Diego to Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington. What places should we be sure to visit and or stay at? Any route suggestions? I'm more interested in smaller towns - mountains - trees.

We are considering this a scouting trip for possible relocation. We're thinking most likely Montana, Colorado or Wyoming, and will want a place with at least 10-20 acres. Any suggestions? What are some nice areas/towns.

The best place to visit in Montana is Glacier National Park. The views are amazing and the hiking is wonderful. You will most definitely see a Mountain goat or two. There is good property here and lots of space for those who treasure their privacy. The nicest towns (if your looking for the smaller towns) are Kalispell and Whitefish they are within 15 to 25 miles of Glacier National Park, and the Bear Park. If you get a chance to visit the Park you should stop at a quaint little place called The House of Mystery. It is Montana's only vortex, it's really interesting and kids love it!! Hope this helped!!

Head up to San Bernadino and catch old Route 66 across Arizona and New Mexico. There are lots of websites on Route 66.

Then take I-25 up through Colorado.

In Wyoming, you must see Yellowstone. It is amazing.
The waterfalls alone are worth it, and the geysers.

Idaho has pretty much nothing but trees for most of the state, except in the SW corner.

If you are coming back from Seattle, take the Pacific Coast, not I-5. It is one of the greatest drives in the world, especially the northern California coast.

it extremely is a eye-catching tension from Wyoming to WA, and intensely achievable. I observed interior the information the day only before this that they are offering non-provide up flights from Bellingham to Hawaii. that could help shrink the time spent with customs and permit you to bypass to British Columbia in case you like. i might check out the activities schedules: Mariners, Seahawks, Rockies, Broncos as all of them have very stunning stadiums. take excitement on your holiday. Well don't skip oregon!

haha well there is always yellowstone(althought it seems like you don't want to tourist places)

But for road sugestions, I would stay on the interstates, witht he rugged terrain in the west the interstates are probably the better of the roads.
