I'm in the process of building a display shelf and it's probaby going to be really heavy. How do i mount it to the wall securely without making it look trashy?

Use mollies or anchors to secure it to the wall where there are no studs. Also, purchase mounts that are rated for the weight of the shelf, there are several types to choose from, some of which can be easily concealed behind the shelf. You can also choose visible, decorative mounts as well. Go to the hardware department of your home improvement store with a picture of the shelf you are building and they will help you choose the mounting system that will both secure and look best for your shelf.

Instead of attaching the shelf to the wall through the braces or angles that run under your shelf use a 1/2 inch or3/4 inch piece of board that is the same width and height as the shelf.Preferably the same type wood or color.Attach the board solidly with large screws then mount the shelf onto the now solid board.

I hung a 12 foot long by 12 inch wide shelf made of 5/4 pine in my daughters room to hold a ceramic doll collection. The shelf spanned the entire length of one wall. What I did to be sure it never fell on her was to drill holes into every stud along the wall. Then I screwed in large lag bolts, leaving them extended about 6 inches. (sorry I don't remember the size) After that I cut off the heads with a hack saw. I drilled corresponding holes in the back edge of the shelf and mounted it onto the bolts.... It never came down. I still wonder if the owner of that house after me ever took it down. I am sure they would have had some fun trying to remove those lag bolts with out heads on them. This was 11 years ago! Good luck!

How thick will the shelves be? They make some sort of stud that mounts onto a wall (through the wall stud) and then has a stud sticking out from the wall that the shelf mounts to...the stud slides into the shelf so that it doesn't show...not sure what it's called...

Use a stud finder to find the studs and mark where they are at. Then use adequate hardware to support the shelf and screw them into the studs. The drywall is usually to weak to support a lot of weight and will either crack and break or the hardware will pull out of the wall and leave your shelf in a pile on the floor. For heavier objects always use the studs.

If really heavy, use a strip of wood stretched across several studs, and anchored into same. Then attach the shelf to that strip of wood. You can shim the back of the shelf at the bottom to keep it an equal distance from the wall and level.

either toggle bolts or metal anchors with the self tapping bit built on also you might want install bracing on either side for added
strenght and anchor them as well probably have to cut them at a 45degree angle on both sides

make sure you hit a stud in the wall when putting in the mollys and screws for your brackets
