In case you haven't noticed:
The US are the living proof that unbridled Capitalism DOES NOT WORK, at least for the majority of the people.
Look at your own gouvernment and tell me with a straight face that they are squeaky clean and got into power by legitimate, democratic means.
I still won't believe you.

Capitalism works great for the wealthy and the people with power. It doesn't work so great for the average person and it doesn't work at all for the poor. Socialism is intended to work for the people, all of the people which our government purports to do, but does not seem to. We have the biggest income discrepancies in this country that we have ever had and the disparity is growing all the time. 2% of our citizens have 90% of the wealth, yeah this is working great for the 2% and for the next 10% down the line. The problem is that socialism has never been attempted with a democratic government. All socialistic economies have operated in countries with totalitarian governmental systems. We need to be more socialistic like countries such as England and European countries where everyone gets medical care and education.

Universally, there are two groups that will espouse socialism, the ruling elite and the labor unions. Generally speaking outside of those two groups and their syncophants most people either do not understand the insidious nature of socialism or they do not like it. In my case I despise it because it is evil.
By promising the labor unions more money and power in the political process, the ruling elite get elected. Keep in mind these people have been in or among the ruling class their entire lives, unless of course they came into power in a coup, in which case it is fascism or communism, both of which are natural progressions of socialism.
Socialism has NEVER worked anywhere where it has been tried. You can see it failing in the US where people are less willing to have the government steal their hard earned money to give to those who will vote for the ruling elite. You see really our system of government does not at all resemble a republic anymore, but more like a Camelot of socialists and whores who will sell their souls and your future for money and power, if you doubt me take a look at who is funded by whom in the election process, it will show you the whores and who has bought them. Pay particular attention to the 527s, which were created to fool you into thinking we had campaign finance reform.
Listen, in the US politicians and the media want you focus on the president, but he is term limited and can only have an effect for eight years whereas the real power and center of corruption in the US is in congress. It is full of career corrupt politicians who only serve themselves and their big money supporters.

Alan Garcia from Peru is not socialist. He could be socialist one day and capitalist the other day. For now is capitalist. His party dances two songs at the same time.
The last election, the second round was between Garcia (who almost destroyed Peru between 1985-1990 and kicked a person in 2004) and Humala (who likes dictatorships). People who supported other parties chose Garcia.

Capitalism failed after its numerous depressions from maldistributions of wealth, culminating in the Great Depression.
Every country on earth is a mixture of capitalism and socialism because, well, laissez-faire capitalism ceased working long, long ago.
The problem the world faces now is privatized profits but socialized risk. This is a reason why America is the largest debtor nation on earth- its profits have been privatized but its risks socialized (Iraq, Katrina, Savings & Loan Scandal, Chrysler). Our wealth is shipped overseas to other countries or Swiss bank accounts but we still have our socialized debts to pay.
Chavez and others are spreading their wealth, socializing profits and risk, to avoid becoming larger debtor nations, too.

I think the problem is not that they actually believe in these people, but more that they don't believe in anything any more, certainly not in their presidents, governments and politicians PLUS they looove to be lied to. It's really very sad. Also, and this is quite interesting, you see in Venezuela for example, that the political elite lives in great opulence, steal and plunder and are as corrupt as the capitalistic governments before them.
Great question, btw.

Many times they don't actually believe the tenants of socialism, but recognize it as the best way to garner support through the poorest to gain the power which they truly desire
