I recently submmited my resume to a job that I seem highly qualified for, and they are asking for a lot of responsabilities that aren't normal for the position I applied for. They sent me back a simple response "How much?" Shouldn't they be the ones telling me their offer so that we can negotiate... What should I say?

Except for entry level or hourly work, most hirers will ask you for your salary demands. It is part of the process. They are hoping you will ask for significantly less than they are willing to pay and so get you for a bargain.

Do you have a similar job now? If you do, up what you make now by 5 - 10%.

If you don't currently have a job (or a job in your field), do some research. Go online to Monster or other sites and look at their information on salaries. And, research the company, see if they tend to hire at, above, or below the average.

Also, I believe you should justify your number. "I am currently making $XX, I would need to make more to justify changing companies" or "I looked at the average and they said $XX, I would expect it to be somewhere in that range."

How much? They're just putting in your hands the first move. You have to decide to be the first to play or send they back the answer. If the responsibilities are broader than you were expecting, you can ask higher than you imagined you would do. But if you really need the job, don't think too much, ask a reasonable amount and try to succeed. If anything goes wrong, remember, this is not the last chance. Anyway, don't let they put too much on you, without any advantages, try another place.

The answer to this question is ALWAYS that you are open to opportunities and advancement, you are flexible at the moment with your salary, and would prefer to speak with them in person before naming a figure.

You obviously haven't even had an interview yet. Get there first.

You have an equal right to ask "what did you pay the last person in this job?"

Go to www.salary.com, and type in your zip code.

Choose the field and job you applied for, and it will give you the low and high salary ranges, so you can better base your decision on that.

What do you think you are worth.

Look up what that position usually asks for and ask for a bit more. They want to see what you think you are worth. Tell them your amount you are asking but that you are flexible.

Good luck!
