Possession by whom? Handguns are tools, and tools in responsible hands can be very useful. Tools in the wrong hands, or misused tools, can be dangerous. Deadly, since we're talking about guns.

Here's one "pro" - criminals denied access to tools like guns will shift their focus to other tools like knives and bats, or they will simply ignore the law and continue to possess guns. Meanwhile, law-abiding citizens who are denied access to guns will, by definition of "law-abiding," stop possessing guns and quite possibly will not use knives and bats as they are not as practical for defense. So the criminals are now at an advantage over the law-abiding, and they know it. Look at Britain's crime rate for validation of this concept.

Benminer: that's exactly what I'm saying. Ban guns and the only people without them will be those who abide by the law - not the criminals. So by banning guns we, the law-abiding, have been placed at a disadvantage over the criminals.

The pros are that there are procedures first to get handgun licenses. After you get your license you are able to purchase a handgun for yourself. Upon doing so by law you must register your handgun and you are required to have a safety feature on the handgun, this is not the switch that is on the gun itself it is a keyed trigger lock. Handguns should be stored in safe accessible places. (Wall safe, chest, safe, gun case, etc.) Owning a handgun is a MAJOR responsibility and not to be taken lightly. For your safety and for others YOU are the one that must take the first step to GUN SAFETY!!!

The cons are that there are people out there that have licenses and purchase guns and sell them on the streets to whomever has the money. These people are not being responsible for their actions. They do not know what the guns are being used for. Most of the time the serial numbers are removed so that law enforcement agencies have a harder time tracking down where the gun was purchased from and who bought them. However they can track a gun by the markings that are made on the bullet casing (This can be considered as a PRO) Different makes and models of handguns have almost a fingerprint feature that shows up on the casings. We can find out the make, and model of the gun just by the casing and its markings.

I hope this helps you with your debate. good luck. :)

It is an inadamite object that needs, as Sir Isaac Newton would say, an outside force to make it work, because an object at rest will remain at rest, until acted upon by an outside force.

There have been to many stories of people "that do what their told" and are killed. We have had mountain lion attacks in this state. I'm too old to fight off with an knife, let alone my barehands.

The last murder in this town was with a knife. My father was murdered with a car. The first recorded murder was with a rock. You can be killed with shoe laces, knives, scissors, rocks, cars, some kind of a blugeon, rope, hammer, screwdriver, and the list goes on and on.

A firearm gives a person a chance for survival. I wouldn't trust the non-lethal "options" for some basic reasons. Pepperspray has a possibility for blowback-making you more vulneralbe, then if the person's been peppersprayed before their more apt to be able to ignore the affects. If they are on drugs it will HAVE NO EFFECT on them. Tasers have killed a few people and I have seen a few people that need to be repeatedly shocked for ANY affect.

The person to blame is the thug. I criminal is a criminal. The recidivsim rate is too high. They are not being punished, my guess is they just don't care.

The Supreme Court has had several cases where they have declared that the police don't have to respond. In case of a natural disaster you are on your own.

Where I live the criminals assume your armed and they move along, we are more apt to be attacked by animals.

What you don't realize those of us who carry have training and train on a regular basis. Most of us also have first aid training and CPR. I know in this state it can take upwards of thirty minutes for a deputy to respond. It takes a person thirty seconds to bleed out if their neck is slashed.

If you want to be a victim go ahead, just let those of us who are law abiding citizens do what we need to do to protect our own and if your in danger and are lucky we'll have your back.

Handguns are good for a variety of shooting sports, target shooting, plinking and competitions. They are also easier to handle while hunting which makes them an ideal choice for disabled hunters. Handguns are also a good option for personal defense and law enforcement.

The bottom line is Handguns and all firearms need to be handled with respect. Households with children NEED to keep all firearms locked-up. Also, anyone who owns a Firearm of any type needs to be trained in how to safely handle and fire it.

Manevitch - Criminals may be denied access to guns legally but they certainly have no trouble getting them illegally. Criminals. don't. follow. the. law.

I support higher penalties for illegally selling, carrying, and transporting guns. I also support the right for law-abiding citizens to carry guns for self-defense with minimal interference from The State or fear-mongering liberals.
