You actually can't improve the quality of the file. No software, or high end equipment can create qualities that are not there to begin with.

It is much like a low res photo image. Nothing can create the details that are not in the file.

Audio files work the same way. If the tonal details are not there, even the best equipment can not put it there. If it's a crappy sound file, the equipment can only play the crappy sound in clear, high fidelity, but still crappy sound.

well ipods dont have good sound quality. very hard to improve. thats why i went with creative.
