a.) Used nanos are easiest to find on eBay or other auction sites, or in forums like http://www.ilounge.com. Nanos are still hot so don't expect a huge savings.
b.) Other brands, such as Creative, Sanyo, and SansDisk offer good MP3 players that can be had cheaper- often with a better feature set for the money- and they are more likely to go on sale. Check http://www.techbargins.com for them and for the rare deal on nanos.
c.) If you don't have much money, CDs are still the cheapest route. Even with a nano, etc., you'll need to make or buy the music files. iTunes and many others offer music for around a buck a song. That adds up fast!
