"Drop the ball" means die.

I first encountered the phrase in the book "The World According to Garp" by John Irving when Roberta (formerly the famous football player Robert someone) died of old age.

I believe that the term is applied to ball players such that I would say "Dallas Cowboys star Terrel Owens tried to drop the ball."
