and a flat panel or something similar but to get those, do they need to be a certain kind to work with my tower?

I bought a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse for my compaq. I works perfectly.

They don't have to be a special kind etc. The flat panel will work once you plug in it, your computer's software will recognize the new monitor. As for the wireless keypad & mouse some require additional software but that usually comes with the stuff you purchase or your operating system will find it for you.
By the way i would advice that you think about rechargeable batteries for the mouse especially.
