hey, today i just turned on my wifi connection, cause i didnt really understand that it could coonect to local networks that i dont have to subscribe to. So today i turned th switch on in my laptop and it said that it found an open network, so i connected to it and i was able to surf the web wirelessly!!!.
I just dont know how this is possible? Is it okay to do? Does the other person with the original network know that i am using his or her network? Can he or she hack into my computer by me connecting to their network? What is the fine is this is illegal?
How can i go undetected if this is illegal? Is it safe to do this?
please reply to my questions and maybe some info that i might find useful.

im not saying others using my network....im saying me using other's networks that my computer detected and connected to wirelessly.

Its not illegal. But they can slap your hand.
Make sure while your connected your not sharing any files.

in open network others can login to your network.
you must assign a security system like WEP or filter MAC address fro your AP.

I wouldn't leave it open.... other ppl can surf the web on your dime, they can get to your machines, router.
