The engine is a 5.0 litre Ford and the gearbox was run with no oil for a short period of time but i guess it was long enough to ruin the gears. Right now the engine won't even turn over because the gears won't turn. I have a local mechanic that said he would repair it for $1000. Maybe that's not a bad deal?

There are many special tools needed to replace the gears that you can only get through a dealer. The tools alone are almost $1k. The price is good, if he will give you a written warranty for his work.
I see you now know that you don't fill a Cobra drive with oil like a Mercruiser.

That job requires special tools to make the repair and other tools to exact the calbration of the gears, not mention knowlege. I'd take it to a dealer, they have all that. Plus add the time it would take you to do it - provided nothing goes wrong! - and it might be very much worth the cost of having it done right. My experience dealing with "local" mechs in the past has been less than good. Unless it's an emergency - no thanks! If you have a dealer then go with that.

Sorry to bust your bubble and hurt others feelings but the answer is NO and most Marine techs could not do this job either nor do they have the special tools to do so i spent 80 hrs in (OMC) school learning this unit when it replaced the Stringer drive in 1986 and they stoped production in 1996 when they joined with Volvo buy one on EBay just make sure you bid on one that has the same gear ratio hope this helps Michael

You may have seized the bearing pack. Your bill will be more than 1k, more like $3500. A backyard mechanic can do anything except get you into shore when you seize up again.

I know of a shade tree mechanic that repairs motors in the lakes area where I live. If you are mechanically inclined you should not have any problems. The hardest part is finding parts.

gears & bearings will cost about $300-$500...labour at what you earn an hour....lets say..$50.. time it takes to do the job...10 hours..total...$1000.00....seems like a fair price...yes you can do it yourself..pats avail from your local dealer...so you can save the labour costs....but will not have any waranty..most mechanics will give you a few months watanty...( whats the waranty worth to you??)
