I've heard that not doing this drill properly can fowl up a hitter's swing. I was looking for some instruction as to how to execute this drill properly.

It can be problematic and the real key is to not be afraid to get close to the batter. I suggest practicing without a batter and trying to throw the ball to the exact same spot in the air every time. Then bring in a batter, do your throws and have them get a comfortable place to stand to hit. Remember a batter is supposed to hit the ball out in front of the plate so keep the ball in front and not coming from behind.

If this is still uncomfortable, then go buy about 5 dozen of those little plastic golf balls with holes in them. Stand about 15 feet out in front of the batter and pitch them normally. They are much smaller and therefore harder to hit. This increases the batters focus and hand-eye coordination. BEWARE!!! THIS DRILL WORKS VERY WELL!!! Soon they will be driving these little plastic projectiles back down your throat. I've had a 12 year old boy break a pair of sunglass off of my head. If you want to teach hitting this is the best drill going.

I've seen a tool on batsbatsbats.com, and I can't recall what the name of it is, but basically, it's a long nylon bar with a nylon ball the size of a baseball attached to the end of it. It is designed to help with hand-eye coordination, just like soft-toss, but without the necessity to use a ball.

Just a suggestion.

Good luck!

soft toss is not a hitting drill but a way to play catch, its just throwing the ball a long distance easily
