As a teacher, I can certainly agree that instructing in a subject can help clarify one's thoughts; it can force one to be more organized, for example. Moreover, one can learn more a lot about a subject from teaching it.
But I'm not so sure I can go wholeheartedly along with your statement:
"you don't know what you know until you try and teach it."
I think it's far too general a statement. I'm quite sure that a person can know a lot of what he/she knows without teaching that knowledge.
And I very much doubt, even if it were true, that THAT is THE problem with most Americans today.

If you cannot teach what you "know" successfully to someone else, then maybe you don't really "know" it yourself.
Similiar to you don't know what someone else has been through until you walk a mile in their shoes.
However I know many people do teach others and they know zip about what they are spouting, they just have a good cheat sheet. But do you really want to cheat your way through life?
The problem with most Americans is they don't want to learn to begin with, they fake their way through most areas, pretending they DO know. It usually catches up with them though.

It has always been my personal belief that you don't understand something fully until you try to teach it someone else. Teaching not only passes knowledge onto others, but also allows you, the teacher, to learn too!!
