When it comes to iPods (and other projects), Apple likes to keep things under wraps (and is VERY good at it); rumors tend to circulate with little official word, and it's not until Apple makes an announcement (usually in a high-profile press event) that concrete information is usually revealed. Sometimes vague reports emerge prior to the announcement--everyone pretty much knew that Apple was going to get into the downloadable movie business--but details typically aren't known until they come out of head Apple guy Steve Jobs' mouth.
Just last month Apple released its "upgraded" 5G iPods (the original 5G's came out at the same time last year), giving the 5G a larger capacity hard drive on the high-end (from 60 to 80GB) and adding gapless playback, search, and video games, but basically the looks and interface are still the same.
The long-rumored "6G" (rumored to have a widescreen horizontal display and touchscreen controls) probably won't be out until this time next year, though some industry buzz says it may be out as early as January of '07 (when, at the annual SF Macworld Expo, Apple usually trots out something spectacular).
