I am very surpised as they have no sense of humour.
When I went to Melbourne and got off the plane the man at the airport asked if I had a criminal record, I replied, "Oh I'm sorry, I wasn't aware you still needed one"

Nowadays in the UK, I hear my black friends calling each other the "******" term like it means nothing, and so do my Pakistanis friends, calling each other "paki" all the time. However, fights break out if a fair-skinned person mentions these terms to any of them... If they are a seriously offencive words, then people from these denominations should stop belittling them and stop their use, rather than the double standard. However, although like you said, it is known as an offencive term used by non-Pakistanis, I do think that it is a convenient short for the name Pakistani otherwise.
