Probably the single largest impact it had was to seriously reduce the influence the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) had over Directors. After refusing to run the credits at the beginning of the film, Lucas took the SAG fines and penalties and promptly quit the SAG. This was a tremendous blow to the influence of the SAG.

Secondary to that would be the impact of his tremendous advancements in ultra-high quality special effects.
