How can someone tell you you are the end and and be all and be afraid of the relationship at the same time? Would you walk away from this even if you know she/he is the only one you could ever settle down with and be happy? Should I start looking for a vice to quell this pain? :-)

You seemed to be a little cagey about whether you're the guy or the gal. I'll guess by your name that you're the guy. If you gf says she loves you but is afraid of the relationship, then it's the fear of commitment she's afraid of. If she commits, she is locking out other potential partners in her life. She has to be ready for a commitment, you can't force it on her. If you love her and can handle this, give her space and accept her. If you want a commitment but she won't give it, move on.

S/He's not afraid of commitment- s/he just doesn't want to be commited to you!
Of course I'd walk away. And you don't "know" that s/he is the only one you could be happy with.
Who needs a vice- go out and enjoy life. Get a hobby.

It sounds like they are handing you a line. If someone thinks you are wonderful but they are afraid to make a commitment move on. There is someone better out their for you.

no one person is the end all be all to someone else's happiness (or if they are it is not a healthy relationship!)
i truly believe in the "just not that into you" mentality. if they really are in love then they will take the chance & face their comittment issues. if they can't then they aren't worth it.
