I mean in relation to salmon, talapia, fish like that. I know people say catfish and jellyfish because you can't just call it cat or jelly. I AM TALKING ABOUT A FISH THAT HAS NO REAL REASON TO SAY FISH BEHIND THE NAME.

ALL THE EXAMPLES EVERYONE IS GIVING ARE THE NAME OF SOMETHING ELSE SO IT NEEDS FISH BEHIND IT. GOLD. JELLY, SHELL, ETC.

You are correct. It started out as a regional dialect in Eastern waters. When the fishermen came home the villagers would cry: Did you catch those tuna fish??? The phrase was never used with other kinds of fish. The phrase stuck and has been used since.

Why do some people say TUNA instead of tuna fish? Tuna or tuna fish both end up understood as the same thing. But cat, jelly, star, clown, gold, none of these are the same thing as with the fishy ending.

Because Tuna has several meanings
Not only is it the fish we eat but
It is a Prickly Pear of Jamaica
Also a New Zealand eel
So when you say i had tuna today most people do assume you mean tuna fish but to keep matters clear people just got in the habbit of saying Tuna fish so it is not confusing..

I only say it when trying to mimic a Wisconsin accent!
I agree it's just plain ol' tuna.
By the way, Gummi Bear Man, it is very unpleasant to come across name calling on Y!A. Why can't we all just get along?
Shellfish is not a specific fish... a lobster is shellfish, a crab is shellfish.... what would you be eating if it was just 'shellfish?'
