I would like to know if I plant an acorn will it grow? Do I have to do anything special to it like soak it? Score the acorn first? What is the best way to plant one so a tree will grow, or will it? There are brown ones in the little shell and there are ones still green with no shell??????

I don't think there is a wrong way to plant an acorn.. i have seen acorns put into a small potted plant by a blue jay, then had to get it out next spring.. I would suggest starting it in a pot.. oak trees have a root system that goes straight down into the soil.. so if you see one growing, it is almost impossible to dig up the root for transplant.. the one in the pot i pulled out.. the tree was 3" the root was at least 9".. good luck P.S. go with the dark seeds.. with or without the shell..

Check out the link below from Oklahoma State University. It has some excellent information about growing oaks from acorns, which types of oaks may need help to break dormancy, checking for usable vs. unusable acorns, etc. Hope it helps & good luck!

BTW, I agree that you can just plant them in loose soil, as well. I have the same problem of seedlings all over from squirrel burial. But many of them die off before they get to any size, which is why you may want to pay a bit more attention to yours.

My daughter's campfire group planted acorn in cups of palin old potting soil (holes poked in the bottom of the cup).

They just stuck the acorn in there, and kept it moist. Almost ALL of them germinated and sprouted.

shell on (helps feed the seedling by rotting away) throw it in good rich soil (where it will be, they are sometimes hard to transplant) and water, should grow well. You can also get great tips from www.hgtv.com Good Luck!

try if you want but it is easier to look around and find a little oak tree just starting. You are giving it a life because left where it is it will be crowded out.

If the soil is loose enough they will germinate on their own, I have to pull seedlings out of my flower beds every year, thanks to the squirrels burying them!
