There was a great cobbler war in 1967 and the cobblers were doing well. But the shoe mfgers created a terminator like device that hunted them down, later they used them to produce shoes some still exist to this day. Legend has it when the last cobbler died who swore a blood oath to haunt all shoe manufacters that were not cobblers he wonders thru the factories causes disasters, HE WILL NEVER QUIT.

We have one in our town. He's very busy and very expensive. I guess it's a dying art as many people buy shoes that are considered 'throw away' and wouldn't bother repairing them. Just go to payless and get a new pair, it's too bad as a good pair of shoes can last a lifetime with proper care but people like to have 30 pair of cheap rather than 3 pair of good shoes.

They were taken over by ( let's say ) Delman/I. Miller, the largest, high-fashion chain of shoe stores in the United States plus all those shopping malls and convenient shopping centers of USA suburbia.

Chinese factories can make shoes cheaper, so they all found other jobs.
