Why is it hot/cold?

Thanks for all answers!

the mesosphere is definately cold! the reason is that there is nothing in the atmosphere at that altitude which will warm it up. Also air molecules are so far apart that there is no way for any warmth to be perserved

The mesosphere (from the Greek words mesos = middle and sphaira = ball) is the layer of the Earth's atmosphere that is directly above the stratosphere and directly below the thermosphere. The mesosphere is located about 50-80/85km above Earth's surface. Within this layer, temperature decreases with increasing altitude. The main dynamical features in this region are the atmospheric tides which are driven by momentum propagating upwards from the lower atmosphere and extending into the lower thermosphere.
from Earth's surface to the top of the stratosphere (50km) is just under 1% of Earth's radius.Because it lies between the maximum altitude for most aircraft and the minimum altitude for most spacecraft, this region of the atmosphere is only directly accessible through the use of sounding rockets

Hi. It is part of the atmosphere. The height is from 30 to 80 km and it goes from cool to very cold. It does not get much heat from sunlight and the pressure goes down as the height goes up. Remember that space is very cold!
