The key to upgrading your video card at this point lies what ports your motherboard has... If it has a PCI-E slot, then you can go as high as you'd like. If that's the case, then I'd shoot for anything that's rated as DirectX 10.0 compatable. Those of us that jumped at the 7800 GTX got royally shafted when we discovered DX10 would have a hole new set of features that our cards would not be able to take advantage of.
If you have an AGP slot instead of a PCI-E slot, then you'll have to be more selective. The upper range of video cards are almost all exclusively PCI-E, although as of about a year ago I believe you could still find a few higher range cards for AGP 8x...
Ascertaining whether you have AGP 8x or PCI-E is incredibly important before you make any decision on a video card, however. Once you figure that out, then you can move on to price range and feature set.

If you have the model number of your motherboard, check to see what it can handle before buying a card. But it sounds like you should look for something in the 128 or 256 range, depending on your budget. I have an ATI card but I think NVidia GeForce cards are much better. Go on Yahoo Shopping and compare prices for stores offering them and the range MBs offered.

TomsHardware.com regularly does articles to compare graphics cards, and other computer parts in general.
I'll give you a link to a great article that will help you get the best video card for whatever price range you want. It's advice for October 2006. You can't get any newer than that. :)
Hope this helps!

relies upon what you're in for. because you said information superhighway gaming, that throws Wii out the window to be run over through a truck promptly, leaving the gool ol' PS3 vs 360 argument. 360 is extra monetary seeing because the most inexpensive version of it really is only $2 hundred. also lots of the magnificent video games are on both consoles so that you'll relax guaranteed that you're not to any extent further lacking out on a lot in case you opt for only one HD console. except MGS4, Little vast Planet, 2d variety warring parties (extra ideal controllers), and perchance Ratchet and Clank, the real gaming soul (specially multiplayer) belongs to the 360 this era. I have all 3 consoles with right here video games. 360: Gears of conflict a million & 2, Halo 3, GTAIV, useless turning out to be, CoD: international at conflict, & Bioshock. PS3: useless area, MGSIV, Soul Calibur IV, & Uncharted Wii: SSB Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Zack & Wiki, Metroid best 3, and prefer 10+ bunch of alternative video games i do not somewhat care a lot for. From my reviews with all 3, specially the Wii, i will allow you to keep in mind that the genuine video games and on line reviews belong to the 360 & PS3. Wii only would not cut back it more beneficial than a pair of weeks with its mini-sport collections of video games... outdoors of the first 4 video games i discussed for the Wii, there is fairly a lot no longer something that justifies procuring that gadget. in case you ever hear a "gamer" declaring they offered the Wii fullyyt for Wario Ware, Carnival video games, Mario party, Wii fit, is both insane or has been threatened to assert that. easily, the DS is miles extra ideal than the Wii...

ATI makes the best graphics card to date, so anything by them will be good, i have an ATI X800GT. It's a pretty old model but it cost about £300 and it plays the latest games no problem.
