The biggest deal is that the nuclear reaction leaves behind radioactive materials, which cause dozens of health problems, the worst being birth defects and cancer. I really hope this isn't a serious question, because if the common man no longer knows the effects of the atomic bomb, the country is in a sad state, and perhaps nuclear war isn't as far off as we'd all like to think.

Atomic bombs get their fire power (energy) from nuclear reaction. Depending on the type of atomic bomb either a nuclear fusion (Hiroshima) or or fission type of (Hydrogen bomb) nuclear reaction is used where some mass gets converted in to energy. These nuclear reactions produces many isotopes which are radioactive. So that's how they are connected. Usually college level nuclear chemistry books have them. I can refer to Samuel Glasstone book. It is aheavy and thick book. May be you should look first in wikipedia
