I like Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse. It's under $10 and has perfect coverage. Even their Pure Makeup is good and it's about $5.

I am very fond of Clinique - you may find it a bit pricy, but you won't have to use nearly as much product as with the cheaper brands, so in reality, you'll get more for your money.

Before I started using Clinique I always experienced one of two things with make-up crème: Either the crème seemed to vanish into my skin in a few hours; or the crème would stay "on top of" my skin and rub off on anything, I was touching.
(Btw, I have sensitive/oily skin).

Mary Kay for everyday and M.A.C. for special occasions - never needed a single touch-up during the wedding I was in last.

of course they all feel they have the best product......depends on your skin type......oily - do not need anything water based.....dry - do not need powdery type....all trial and error until you find what covers as you wish and is good to your skin.
In regard to price, the better the product the higher the price - is a given in most products of any kind.
Start out simple and work your way thru - you will find something just for you!
Best wishes!
