Is it normal? It depends on the people involved. If you and your partner feel comfortable doing it ,then that is between you. If your partner isn't comfortable with it then don't do it. I have tried it but it hurts me to much. Other woman it doesn't bother them. There are people that do do it and there are some that don't it is really up to you.

Nothing wrong or "gay" about it.

People "repulsed" by the mere idea of it are probably puritanical hypocrites.

I would not say "common" practice, but it has deffinatly broken down the taboo barriers over the last 20 or so years.
It is still considered "perverted" by most, and even outlawed in some states of the USA.
Still, it is a practice that is becoming more and more accepted over the years. It is not uncommon to find couples performing this form of sex in the year 2006. In fact, most couples I know of regularly (as in more than once a year) practice an*l sex.
It is still a very sensitive subject, as well as general area (pun intended) so if you plan to practice it, do not expect great results at first; things must be "smoothed in" and properly prepared before a successful penetration with pleasure is achieved. Key words: Relax and Lubricant.
Just remember you can NEVER have too much lubricant when it comes to this form of sex

In the sense that it is as old as humanity, and practiced by both gay men and straight men, yes, it's normal. It is not normally dangerous provided the active person wears a condom. However, it must be done with respect and patience for the receiver.
In many cultures, anal intercourse was chosen to avoid pregnancy; now of course we have other birth control options.
Some men prefer anal intercourse when their partners are in late pregnancy; and both vaginal and anal intercourse have been said to actually start a woman's labor -though that's more likely related to the excited state of sexual arousal than the act itself.

Define normal. By social norms it is still a relatively taboo subject; however a great number of people engage in the practice and enjoy it. By this definition, I would say it's normal.
And it's certainly more normal than having sex with an animal at any rate.
