To escape Greek tyranny

Actually I assume it was to expand Britain's Empire and utilize Americas resources. I still bet the Greeks had something to do with it though.

To allow the English Crown (King/Queen) to expand the influence and power of the British Empire.

There was great wealth to be found in the New World. All of the major European powers were competing to gain access to this wealth. If England did not begin exploring, settling, and exploiting sections of the New World they would have been doomed to becoming a second-rate nation and eventually would have been overrun by their long-time enemies (Spain, France, etc.) who DID become wealthy and powerful from their New World colonies.

The people who actually CAME to the New World colonies came for a variety of reasons, including the desire to serve their King and Country, the desire to explore, the desire to live more independently (to escape either religious or political persecution), or to become wealthy and powerful themselves.

the reason they were founded was because England sent people to settle in the Americas, so they could gain territory and resources. (ie corn, grain, fish, tobacco etc). Mercantilism was when a country creates little colonies in places they invaded, so they colonists send resources back to the "Mother Country". So basically, a colony only existed for the benefit of the "Mother Country".

Easy way for the king to pay off debts to friends. Simply grant them some land somewhere far away that you don't care about. Also, those sons (not the first born) who had no hope of ever being landowners now had a place to go to own land of their own.
