How could I work out how big england is across?

Geography homework, need to know where I can get this sort of info.

Using a map and a ruler, measure the width you are looking for (widest or narrowest horizontal width, longest diagonal, or whatever the specific question is) in millimeters or 32ths of an inch.

Then on the map somewhere there will be a scale -- this shows how many real miles are represented per centimeter or inch of the map.

Multiply the width you measured with the ruler by the scale, and you will have your answer.

You might also be able to look it up in some place like wikipedia, but they might not have the exact information your instructor wants.

also i tried what cirestan said below using google earth - that's a great way

pull up england in google earth . . .then go to tools > measure . . . draw a line, and it will show you the exact distance.
