almost all insects are attracted to lights, for them it's a mini sun giving light and warmth, fortunately flies are one of the few which when the lights go off and all the rooms are dark settle down on a wall and wait till dawn before buzzing again.

My wager is that the fittings are not air tight and the flies are seeking for for a fashion to get out of the progression through them. They cling out round abode windows for an identical reason. Ever locate useless flies on your windowsill?

Insects in general use the light of the sun to orient themselves and they are attracted to it. They mistake the light bulbs for the sun.

The light simulates sunlight, they usually stop flying (sleep) when the light goes out.

My guess is for the same reasons moths do. They are attracted to the heat.
