At one, my daughter loved colors and textures . . . and noise! Big wooden blocks that she could bang together and tumble down, fabric or board books with moving pieces, playsilks for peek-a-boo, etc.

An age appropriate toy. Many toys list the age range on the box. I am assuming you know the child is a boy or a girl, but also ask the parents what they do and do not like. Some parents would rather their children not have noisy battery operated toys or media (videos, etc)
Gift certificates are safe and so are clothes.
Oh, a great gift at this age are books! Board books that the child cannot tear. Even if they cannot read yet, they love looking at pictures and the parents can read to them. As they get older, they will read it themselves.
Whatever you get, include a gift reciept so the parents can exchange it if it doesn't fit or is not appropriate.
Have fun shopping!

I think that what some people said about gift certificates is good, however not real fun for you to pick out! If your not around him much, I would stay away from clothes, just because they are hard to chose for people you dont really know well. I have a 1 year old son, and we bought him some of the Fisher Price Little People Playsets and bath toys. Also, any little learning things are great. My son also likes to play with telephones and anything that makes music! Its really easy to find a cute toy for a 1 year old, they usually have a million to choose from, so enjoy your shopping and im sure no matter what you choose, the child will love it.

You can buy a savings bond to help the parents save for the child's education. Clothes are okay too, but girls tend to get too many of them. You can look on toysrus.com and search toys by age to find an appropriate toy. When buying a toy, it is important to buy for the recommended age group. Books are a great gift too, but make sure they are the thick cardboard paged books.

I think clothing is always a good idea. Ask mom for the size. Also gift certificates, cash and books. Toys usually state age appropriateness on the packaging.
Before his birthday arrived, I took my little almost one year old grandson shopping. To his own amusement I let him hold the toys and got some birthday gift ideas. I noted that the balls kept catching his eye. So guess what he got for his birthday.
He came to my house this weekend and spent the entire time playing with a toy golfclub and balls. It was hard to direct his attention anywhere else. He will also pose with a bat ready to swing. (He has watched his older brother play T-ball).
Of course, all children have their own preferences, so you might want to ask the parent what he/she likes. Have fun shopping.

Clothing, but ask what size the child wears before you buy because my 7 month old niece was wearing 18mo clothes.
Books. Either a big beautiful story book for the parents to read to the child or a bunch of little rubber or cardboard books for the child to play with/read.
If you want to buy a toy go to the toddler toy section of the store and find something for 12months and up, or something from the baby deparment for over 9 months.

if you go to the toys r us site, they group stuff by age. get an idea of what's appropriate there. plus, if you're going the toy route, most of them have ages printed on the box. if you want to get clothes, i'd ask the mom what size or buy bigger than 12 months so the kid can grow into them. don't just assume 12 month size will fit the 12 month kid. other than that, a gift card is good. kids like toys though.

There are a lot of educational toys available....try to get something not so noisy and the parents will thank you. If you can't find anything, you can give a gift card. It isn't very personal but the parents can apply it to something the baby wants or needs. A savings bond is a good idea of the parents are financially responsible and won't lose it.

I think it is best to always go for clothes when in doubt, or ask the mother what the child needs. Another good idea is to go to the store and ask the clerk in the children's section. Some toys will tell you an age level.

My son is turning 1 on the 8th of Oct. He is starting to stack and stick things into holes so any kind of learning games would be great. Clothes are always nice. At this point in the game he is running out of all the cool clothes he got when he was born. He needs some 12-18 month clothes.

there are a few age appropriate gifts out there. One being an outfit that is really adorible, second is a stuffed animal, thirdly you could always give the baby some money for its bank account for college, or lastly a savings bond is always a good idea. Money or savings bonds are good ideas so the parents can put it away for college funds.
