and just for him to see that I'm right. He thinks that its unhealthy for the baby to cry and he also thinks that I shouldn't let the baby sleep in the car seat all night (the baby is more comfortable that way). What do you say?

I think your husband's right. MANY studies have been done showing that crying increases babies' stress (and cortisol) levels, which can slow growth, increase separation anxiety, decrease trust in their parents, etc. Crying is a lot of work, and all that energy could be going toward brain growth and development instead.

Newborns shouldn't sleep in carseats or strollers because they don't provide adequate head support. Infants have actually suffocated when left in a stroller or carseat. It's not great for older babies, either. Once in a while, not a big deal, but over time it's bad for their spinal development and posture.

ETA: Saying that crying strengthens the lungs is like saying bleeding strengthens the veins. A quick cry at birth to clear liquid out of the lungs is one thing. After that, if the baby is breathing, baby's lungs are working just fine! :)

The hell is wrong with you... first of all if babies cry its for a reason and you shouldn't let them cry and secondly... a car seat IS NOT a place where you should leave the baby to sleep ALL NIGHT... now i understand if he feel asleep during the day while you were out and you bring him in he is still sleeping but during the Day to leave him till he wakes up is OK.... because he will get up soon.... but leaving him to sleep all night is not good... babies need room to grow and streatch... how do you feel sleeping on the couch all night with your head arched??? well its the same... with swings and bouncers, if you read your intstructions, it said never leave a baby longer than 20-30 min.... why? because babies need to move, babies need to grow.... what do u think his back will look like if he is growing in a car seat arched.... ???

And I'm sure he is comfortable but thats not the point here... its just not good for him!!!

I think a baby crying is indicative of some problem they can't express so they cry.

I think it's every parents duty the investigate all aspects to determine why the baby is crying and to comfort the baby, rather than just let them cry.

The car seat... Hard to say. Sitting up or reclining. Sitting up is not all that great.

Babies, however, need to roam and a car seat might be too confining.

It is not unhealthy for a baby to cry to an extent. Should a child be in a car seat all night no. You need to teach it to sleep in his/her own bed. You shouldn't coddle a baby when they cry but sometimes it needs to be coddled you are both right except for the car seat thing that is not a good thing.

I think he's wrong on both accounts. Assuming your baby is fine (not hungry, poopy, has a tag scratching the back of his neck, ill, etc.) no harm will come from letting him cry it out. If you're talking about a brand new newborn, well, it's probably best to comfort the baby since everything is so bright, new, different and scary. But if your baby is several months old, crying it out is OK.

As for the car seat thing--my younger son's pediatrician suggested we put him to sleep in his car seat to ease his reflux symptoms. He's 14 months old now and still alive to tell about it, you know? :)

Noooo...when my son was born we let him sleep in the car seat for 2 nights. On the baby's 2 day check-up the Dr. told us to NOT do that, it can cause SIDS! You shouldn't let the baby cry this early in the game. He needs you & that is the only way he can tell you!

Edit: the reason that sleeping in the car seat can cause SIDS is because the baby is not able to breathe properly, they can slump down in the car seat.

It is a bad thing for a baby to cry. It means something is wrong. Crying does not help the lungs to develop. Most babies are born with fully developed lungs and the ones who aren't are on oxygen. Bleeding doesn't develop the veins, does it?

As for the carseat: too much time in it can lead to a flat head, but as long as you take baby out while awake, then I see no problem.

I don't like to see a baby crying and an adult just igorning it. And what's up with your baby sleeping in a car seat all night? Now that would get me more angry than the crying, if I were youre husband. Please don't let your baby just lay there and cry and TAKE IT OUT OF THE DANG CAR SEAT and put him/her into a crib to sleep thoughout the night FOR GODSAKE!

Babies cry because they need something. You really should figure out why he's crying, before just ignoring it. I wouldn't let the baby sleep in a carseat all night... needs room to stretch. Would you like to sleep in a recliner all night... eww.

Go to a pediatrician together and ask these questions... see what they have to say. There's more than one way to parent... but since you asked, I'm in agreement with your husband.

It is very healthy for the baby to cry, it helps build their lungs. We have a saying in our family when the baby cries. We say, "he/she doesn't cry blood" It's true. It can't hurt em'. Don't neglect him/her but let him/her cry every once in a while.

Also, it can't hurt for the baby to sleep in the car seat.

You give a little and ask him to do the same.
